How to read Apple Health sleep data in Frewli

Connect sleep reading, find the summary, and check which records it includes. Frewli’s Sleep Metrics card is a recent imported total, so it can differ from a single night shown in Health.

The quick version

Open You > Data sources, connect Apple Health and review sleep reading. Use Sync now for an existing connection. Then open You > Your progress > Details & trends > Sleep Metrics. Check the recent records in Health before treating the total as last night’s sleep.

These steps match Frewli 1.1.1, checked October 26, 2026. Find the current release on the App Store. This guide explains records and app behavior, not a sleep assessment.

1. Connect sleep reading and refresh

In You > Data sources, tap Connect Apple Health and review the permission sheet. Frewli requests sleep reading alongside other Health types. Choose the access you want; it does not write sleep records. For an existing connection, tap Sync now.

To review access later, open Health > Summary, tap your picture or initials, then find Apps under Privacy. Select Frewli and review sleep reading. Apple explains Health app permissions. Return to Frewli and use Sync now after changing your choice.

A connected badge or a general sync message does not confirm that new sleep data arrived. Sleep is one part of the broader Health refresh.

2. Check the period behind the total

Open You > Your progress > Details & trends and scroll to Sleep Metrics. The released app looks back two calendar days from the refresh time. It does not isolate one night or group the result into separate nights. Calendar-day arithmetic can also differ from exactly 48 hours around a clock change.

For a fictional example, two nonoverlapping asleep records of 120 minutes and 180 minutes contribute 300 minutes, or 5 hours, even if they belong to different nights. Those numbers illustrate record arithmetic, not recommended sleep.

Frewli adds the returned sample durations without merging overlaps or applying Health’s source-priority display rules. Two apps recording the same period can therefore contribute overlapping time. The Source caption is not a complete list of contributors; compare the underlying records in Health when totals differ.

3. Read each card as an imported calculation

What Sleep Metrics includes
CardWhat contributes
AsleepREM, Core, Deep, and sleep records without a specified stage.
REM, Core, DeepRecords marked with that stage. Their displayed sum can be lower than Asleep when unspecified sleep is included.
AwakeRecords marked awake in the returned period.
EfficiencyAsleep divided by recorded in-bed time, limited to 0–100%. Without in-bed records, the denominator is asleep plus awake.

Neither the percentage nor a stage duration is a diagnosis. Check the records and period before comparing this summary with another app’s nightly display.

4. Check missing or unchanged values

When no asleep time is stored, the card shows a prompt to connect Apple Health sleep. That prompt does not prove permission was denied or that you did not sleep. Apple deliberately makes unreadable Health data look like an empty result; see its Health data access explanation.

  1. Check that sleep records exist in Health for the recent period, and inspect their dates, times, and sources.
  2. Review Frewli’s sleep-reading permission in Health.
  3. Return to Data sources and tap Sync now, then review Sleep Metrics.

An empty result or a failed sleep read can leave the previous saved summary visible. It does not necessarily clear old numbers or the saved Sleep input. The card has no refreshed-at timestamp, so unchanged values after syncing are not proof of a new import. Avoid adding extra sleep records merely to make two totals match.

5. Keep imported sleep and your check-in distinct

A successful sleep-summary import replaces the Sleep value used by your check-in with Frewli’s own 1–5 estimate. This is not an imported Apple sleep score. You can later change your current check-in values; that does not rewrite the imported Sleep Metrics cards, and another import can replace the manual Sleep choice again.

Sleep context can contribute to the daily plan without changing the displayed goal every time. A goal already reached today can stay fixed. Read the water-goal guide before treating a different input as a promise of a different target.
